Summer Skincare Tips For Black Women

The weather is getting hotter, and summer is fast approaching. That means we are baring more skin and spending lots of leisure time outdoors.

The blazing heat and sun can do a number on our skin, so you want to make sure that you’re protecting it at all costs. The immediate damage of too much sun is sunburn, but the most serious threat is skin cancer.

Steering clear of the sun is the best way to avoid sun damage, but ain’t nobody trying to do that! So while you are enjoying this summer weather, keep yourself protected by practicing these summer skincare tips for a safe time in the sun.

Black Woman At Beach Applying Sunscreen

Make Sunscreen A Priority

I know you’ve heard the phrase because I have heard it numerous times in my life – “Black people don’t need sunscreen!” Yes, we do sis. I know that melanin is magical, but it does not protect us from sun damage.

You should always apply sunscreen about twenty minutes before going outside or getting into the pool to allow time for the product to absorb into your skin. Reapply every three hours while outdoors. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours while you’re swimming.

In an article explaining the differences in sunscreens, states – “UVB is the chief culprit behind sunburn, while UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply, are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other light-induced effects of aging (photoaging). They also exacerbate the carcinogenic effects of UVB rays and increasingly are being seen as a cause of skin cancer on their own. Sunscreens vary in their ability to protect against UVA and UVB”.

Look for sunscreens that offer protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

Stay Hydrated

Be sure to drink water throughout the day during the summer months (actually, try making it a year-round habit) to prevent getting dehydrated. When you are on the go, remember to take a bottle or two of water along with you.

Try to eat fruits that have a high water content such as watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, peaches, and grapefruit. You could even add fruit to your water to give it a bit of flavor.

Staying hydrated will help add to your summer glow.

Protect That Melanin From Head To Toe

When using sunscreen, remember to protect your entire body. Consistent sun exposure without protection will gradually thin your skin and cause wrinkles.

Protect the delicate areas of your eyes with appropriate creams or balms. Look for lip care products with at least an SPF of 15. Consider a lip balm as opposed to a lip gloss when outside during the summer, as balms tend to hydrate more and stay on longer. Also, invest in a pair of good sunglasses to help shield your eye area.

After applying sunscreen to your face, you should apply it to your neck as well. Don’t neglect your chest area, as it is one of the areas of our bodies that is more susceptible to sunburn.

Finally, apply sunscreen to your hands and feet. Invest in a hand cream that offers SPF protection, and be sure to apply it at least twenty minutes before driving.

Don’t Over-Exfoliate

After spending time outdoors, who doesn’t love a good shower or bath? When bathing, be gentle on your skin. I love a good loofah just as much as the next person, but over-exfoliating can irritate our skin. A weekly exfoliating routine using a loofah or mild scrub is ideal in your quest for softer, smoother skin.

Watch your water temperature as well (note to self). I love a hot bath or shower and don’t feel that I’ve gotten clean if my water is not hot. But hot water is drying to our skin. Be sure to turn the temperature down a notch.

Wear The Proper Attire

Always dress to protect. Lightweight clothing and lighter colors are best during the summer months. The light colors help to reflect sunlight and lightweight materials allow for more airflow. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat will also help to shield you from harmful rays.

Lastly, make sure that you and your loved ones take frequent breaks from the sun. Avoid getting overheated by spending lots of time in the shade or going indoors for a quick respite from the heat.

Enjoy your summer!

Skin Care Basics: Building A Healthy Skin Care Routine

Following a daily skin care regimen is something we should all practice. By properly caring for your skin, you can help reduce harmful effects from environmental elements, which will in turn help your skin age gracefully.

One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to a skin care regimen is that you need the most expensive cleansers, moisturizers, and latest tools in order to properly achieve healthy skin. That, my friend, is not true.

Your daily regimen does not have to include a ten or twelve-step process. A good skin care regimen requires proper cleansing, exfoliation, toning, and moisturizing. And all of the items you need can be purchased at your local discount store.

Here are the basic steps you should follow in order to achieve healthy skin and maintain a “youthful” glow.

Cleansing is essential to remove oil, dirt and dead skin cells. Cleanse your face twice a day to remove dirt, makeup, and excess oil.

When cleansing, be very gentle with your skin. Also, pat your face when drying, as opposed to rubbing.

There are many different types of cleansers on the market. Here’s a simple breakdown of a few of the different types of cleansers that are available:

Bar soaps can be a bit more drying than other facial cleansers. They can strip your skin of natural oils, therefore they tend to be more suitable for those with oily skin.

Lotion/Gel cleansers are mild cleansers that are best suited for those with dry or sensitive skin.

Foaming cleansers can also be a bit drying. Therefore, those with oily skin tend to do better with a foaming cleanser.

Medicated cleansers contain acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Salicylic acid helps to clear blocked pores while reducing swelling and redness. Benzoyl peroxide exfoliates the skin and kills bacteria.

Be sure to choose a cleanser that is best suited for your particular skin type. You may have to actually experiment to see which one is best suited for you. You always want to choose the cleanser that is most gentle on your skin.

No matter your skin type, you can benefit from exfoliating. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells from your pores while revealing new skin cells.

Choose a gentle exfoliant or facial scrub. Pay attention to your skin as well. Some people can get away with exfoliating on a daily basis, while others may only be able to do it once a week.

I typically exfoliate twice a week, but you should follow a schedule that is best for you and your skin.

A toner can help to remove any leftover traces of dirt and makeup. People with oily skin or those prone to acne can especially benefit from using a toner.

Our skin is naturally acidic, and during the cleansing process that balance is thrown off. Applying a toner after cleansing helps to restore the pH balance of your skin.

Lastly, you want to make sure that you properly moisturize. You should incorporate a moisturizer into your skincare routine as early as your twenties.

Make sure that you use light-handed, upward strokes to apply moisturizer to your neck and face. Be extra careful with the sensitive skin around your eyes. Remember that less is more. If you apply a thick layer of moisturizer, it can lead to breakouts, because your skin cannot absorb it properly.

Aim to moisturize your skin twice a day. Your daytime moisturizer should include an SPF to help protect against the sun’s rays. Most nighttime formulas do not contain an SPF but instead contain anti-aging ingredients.

Be sure to choose a formula that is compatible with your skin type to avoid breakouts.

One of the most important and often overlooked aspects of healthy skin is simply H2O. Drink plenty of water on a daily basis. According to the Mayo Clinic, women should drink 2.7 liters per day and men should drink 3.7 liters per day.

By incorporating these best practices into my daily routine, I have been able to achieve, and maintain healthier looking skin.

What are your healthy skin essentials?

How To Combat Dryness And Properly Moisturize Your Natural Hair

Dryness tends to be a common problem among those of us with natural hair. I have type 4C hair, and my hair can get very dry at times. Because of the texture of my hair, it can tend to look very dull as well.

When your hair is kinky, like mine, it is harder for the natural oils in your scalp to travel to your hair strands. This will cause your hair to look less shiny and dull.

If your hair is prone to dryness, with proper care and treatment, you can certainly revitalize your mane. Here are some possible causes of dry hair, and ways that you can keep your natural hair moisturized.

Moisturizing Incorrectly

Using the correct type of moisturizer is important to keep your hair moisturized. Water-based moisturizers are best when it comes to moisturizing your hair. Stay away from those products that have water listed near the bottom of the ingredient list.

I have found that plain water is the absolute best moisturizer for my hair. I like to mix ½ cup of water and 1 tbsp of vegetable glycerin in a spray bottle and I mist it onto my hair daily. If I am using a styling product(s) on my hair, I always apply water right before I add any product.

Too Much Clarifying

How To Combat Dryness And Properly Moisturize Your Natural Hair

Are you overdoing it with the clarifying shampoo? I have learned that shampoo, in general, can be drying, but clarifying shampoos are especially drying on natural hair.

I co-wash my hair weekly, and I use a clarifying shampoo once a month. If I have an excessive amount of build-up in my hair then, I will shampoo with a clarifying shampoo or do an apple cider vinegar rinse when needed.

If you use a clarifying shampoo often, or are doing frequent ACV rinses, and have noticed that your hair is very dry, you should cut back and/or space out the clarifying products.

When it comes to shampoos, you should also consider using a sulfate free shampoo. Sulfates can strip your hair strands of their much-needed natural oils. My favorite sulfate free shampoos are Giovanni and Creme of Nature.

Don’t Forget The Deep Conditioner

Deep conditioning is a step that a lot of naturals tend to overlook. Even if your hair is not damaged, you can benefit from a good deep conditioner.

To prevent dryness and damage I deep condition my hair on a regular basis which is typically once a month. If my hair is feeling a bit dryer than normal, I will add a deep conditioner to my weekly wash routine for a couple of weeks.

Some of my favorite deep conditioners are The Mane Choice Tropical Moringa Sweet Oil & Honey Endless Moisture Mask, SheaMoisture Yucca & Plantain Anti-Breakage Strengthening Masque, and Alikay Naturals Honey and Sage Deep Conditioner.

Hot Oil Treatment

Give your hair a little TLC by doing a hot oil treatment. The heat from the oil will open the cuticle of the hair and allow moisture to penetrate the hair shaft.

You can use any natural oil of your choosing. My favorite oils to use when doing a hot oil treatment are olive oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil.

Here is how I apply my hot oil treatment:

1.  Heat water on the stove. (Turn off just before water starts to boil). Add your oil to an applicator bottle or container of your choosing, and place in water until it is warm. (DO NOT heat oil in the microwave. It will lose its nutrients).
2.  Divide your hair into 4 sections for easy distribution.
3.  Apply the oil to each section of your hair.
4.  Massage oil into your hair from roots to tip. Don’t forget your scalp. Massage the oil into your scalp as well.
5.  Cover your hair with a plastic cap and let the oil treatment sit on your hair for at about 15 – 20 minutes.
6.  Shampoo and condition your hair as you normally would.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Be sure to nourish your hair from the inside out. Eat a balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits. Make sure that you are staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Add A Sealant

How To Combat Dryness And Properly Moisturize Your Natural Hair

After moisturizing your hair, be sure you are applying a sealant to help seal in the moisture. Use a thick butter or oil to seal the water/moisture in your hair. Oil by itself will not moisturize your hair, but it will do a good job in helping to seal in moisture.

If your hair texture is kinky, you may benefit from a thicker moisturizer and sealant. I like to use pure shea butter to seal my hair. I also like using olive and grapeseed oils as sealants.

What are some of the things that you do to moisturize your natural hair?

12 Plus Size Sweater Dresses Perfect For The Season

A sweater dress is such a classic piece in my opinion. I especially love the ones that I have featured below. As a bonus, when wearing a three-quarter length sleeve dress, you can wear them throughout the fall/winter season by simply layering it with a light jacket and/or tights or leggings when the weather is really cold out.

Are you as obsessed with sweater dresses as I am? I mean, the possibilities are endless. Pair them with boots, tennis shoes, or heels. You can add your favorite scarf to pull the look together. How about a button up shirt or a duster?

I can’t begin to tell you how many different ways you can rock these dresses. Let me know how you like to wear your favorite sweater dress.

Three Of My Favorite Deep Conditioners for Type 4 Naturals

Three Of My Favorite Deep Conditioners for Type 4 Naturals
Image: HonourYourCrown_ via Instagram

Finding the best deep conditioners for your natural hair can at times seem overwhelming. After all, there are dozens of products that are out there on the market. But how do you determine which product is best for your hair? We all know that what works wonders for one individual, may not work for another.

Maintaining proper moisture is important for all hair types, but type 4 hair (also know as kinky or kinky curly hair) is extremely fragile and more susceptible to damage, especially when not properly moisturized.

Because type 4 hair is tightly coiled, moisture can escape from the hair shaft easily making it even more prone to dryness.

Deep conditioning not only replenishes moisture back into your hair, but it also gives your hair the protein, and essential vitamins and nutrients it needs. This process also helps to add luster and sheen back into the hair.

In order to reap the maximum benefits of deep conditioning, let the conditioner sit on your hair for about 30 minutes to 1 hour. For added moisturization, add heat to your hair when conditioning.  You can place a plastic cap on your hair and sit under a hooded dryer or you can use a thermal conditioning cap.

Some naturals deep condition their hair twice a week, some once or twice a month.  I personally deep condition my hair on a weekly basis. I do this as a preventative measure.  If your hair is feeling a bit dry, you may want to try deep conditioning twice a week.

If you are just starting out with deep conditioning you may want to do it on a bi-weekly basis.  However, you should find a routine that works best for you and your hair.

Beware of over conditioning your hair as well. I know that we tend to think that the longer conditioner sits on our hair the better, but that’s not the case. Over conditioning will cause your hair to become soft and fragile, and more prone to breakage.

Lastly, be sure not to neglect your ends. Our ends are the oldest and driest parts of our hair and therefore they need a little extra TLC.

Keep in mind that just because a  product is expensive does not mean that it will work better.  There are a lot of inexpensive brands that work just as well (if not better in some cases) than the pricier ones.

Here are 3 amazing deep conditioners you should use on your type 4 hair that will give you favorable results.

The Mane Choice Tropical Moringa Sweet Oil & Honey Endless Moisture Mask

Three Of My Favorite Deep Conditioners for Type 4 Naturals

This intensive treatment deeply penetrates to condition and smooth frazzled strands with a nutrient-rich fortifying formula.  It transforms frizzy hair into sleek, healthy strands. C

This treatment contains Certified organic Shea Butter, Plantain and Yucca which combine in a strengthening formula that helps weak hair resist breakage.

Alikay Naturals Honey and Sage Deep Conditioner

Alikay Naturals Honey and Sage Deep Conditioner

Infused with babassu, honey, sage and extra virgin olive oil to hydrate and revitalize your luscious locks.

This delectable hair care product rejuvenates dry, thirsty hair and adds a brilliant gloss to lackluster tresses.

Fall is officially here (can we say pumpkin spice everything).  With the changing season comes a change in wardrobe choices. Pretty soon we will be breaking out our warm jackets, cozy sweaters and my favorite – BOOTS!

When I shop for boots or any other footwear to add to my fall wardrobe, I personally try and stick to more neutral colors so that I get the most wardrobe versatility from them.  However, I do like to add in a little color every now and then.

Here are 15 pairs to shop right now—no matter your style preference.

5 Super Easy Beauty Hacks You Should Definitely Try

5 Super Easy Beauty Hacks You Should Definitely Try
Whether it’s hair, makeup, or skincare, there will always be a beauty hack that will help you to save time all while achieving your desired look. And the best part is you can do them without wasting hours of your time or spending a fortune doing so.
Here are five of my favorite skincare beauty hacks. Feel free to add one or all of them to your beauty regimen.

Exfoliate Your Lips

No one wants to deal with dry, flaky, chapped lips.  To exfoliate your lips, add a dab of vaseline or chapstick to your lips,  take a wet toothbrush and use circular motions to gently remove dead skin.  Afterward, use a tissue or damp washcloth to wipe away the flakes. You’ll have perfectly smooth lips in no time.
You could also mix a bit of coconut oil and sugar together to form a scrub and apply to your lips.  Let it sit for a minute and afterward wipe your lips with a tissue or damp washcloth.

Remove Makeup With Facial Wipes

Too tired to wash your face at night? Keep a package of makeup remover wipes on your vanity or by your bed.
5 Super Easy Beauty Hacks You Should Definitely Try

Use Coconut Oil as a Makeup Remover

Instead of spending money on makeup removers, go the natural route.  Use coconut oil. It gently removes your makeup without leaving your skin oily.

Use Ice Water To Dry Your Nail Polish

If you’re in a hurry and need to dry your nail polish quickly, use ice water.  Add a few ice cubes to a bowl and fill with water. Dip your fingers into the water for about a minute, and Voila! You’ve got dry nails.

Moisturize Your Feet With Vaseline

Give your heels some TLC.  Before you get into bed, cover each foot with Vaseline. Slip on your favorite socks, and leave them on overnight. When you wake up you will have softer, smoother feet.

Seven Summer Essentials Every Girl Must Have

Summer is officially here! Can’t you just picture it … clear blue skies, lazy days by the pool, and endless sunshine.

With that in mind, you’ll want to make sure that you are prepared to enjoy those fun-filled and carefree days of summer.

Check out this list of essential items that every girl should have.

A flattering swimsuit

A nice swimsuit is a no-brainer for summer. Whether you are chilling by the pool or relaxing on a sunny beach, this item is a definite necessity.

Here are three of the cutest I’ve seen this season.

Vintage Sailor Pin Up One Piece Skirtini

One Shoulder Asymmetric Ruffle Bathing Suit

Women’s Snakeskin Bikini Set

Sunglasses are another no-brainer. Not only do they help to protect your eyes from damaging sun rays, they also add the perfect touch to your summer outfit. These Jessica Simpson sunglasses will complement your outfit perfectly.

Stylish Oversized Tote Bag

You will need a nice and sturdy tote bag to keep all of your essential items in one place . Things like your wallet, phone, lipstick, camera, books/magazines, water… you get my drift. This round Bohemian top-handle tote would hold all of your summer time necessities!

A cute, yet comfy sundress

You will definitely need a cute sundress (make that sundresses) for the season. Dresses are light, airy and oh so feminine. Simply pair it with the right accessories, and you are ready for a summer concert, date night, or evening with the girls.

This Off The Shoulder Ruffle Shift Dress can be transformed from a day to a night look seamlessly.

Denim Shorts

Shorts, like these rolled hem distresssed denim shorts are perfect for those days when you want to keep it really casual, but still be super cute.

Throw on some denim shorts along with your favorite t-shirt and sneakers, and you are good to go.

Cute Sandals

Who doesn’t love a great pair of summer sandals! Trust me, you will definitely want to give your toes some breathing room as the temperature climbs. Opt for a pair that is comfortable, yet stylish like these Steve Madden espadrille sandals.

Protect your skin from the sun’s harsh rays by wearing sunscreen. My family’s favorite is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Water Resistant and Non-Greasy Sunscreen Lotion. Be sure to reapply it as necessary, especially when you are swimming.

There you have it, friends. My list of summer essentials. What would you add to this list?
